The Word
THE WORD
John 1:1-14
Introduction: Why is Jesus Christ referred to in this passage as “the Word?”
I. (1:1-3) THE WORD WAS GOD
*This is His deity
A. “In the beginning was the Word” – He always existed
*This is reinforced in verse 2 – “He was in the beginning . . .”
B. “The Word was with God” – He always existed with God
*This is reinforced in verse 2 – “. . . with God”
C. “The Word was God” – He always existed as God
*This is reinforced in verse 3a (cf Genesis 1:1) – “all things were made through Him . . .”
*This is reinforced again in verse 3b – “. . . and without Him nothing was made that was made.”
II. (1:14) THE WORD BECAME FLESH
*This is His humanity
A. God became man
- The Word became flesh
- The Word dwelt among us
B. Man beheld God
- He was full of grace
- He was full of truth
Conclusion: 1. (v.10) Men didn’t know Him – He wasn’t what they expected
2. (v.11) Men didn’t receive Him – He wasn’t what they wanted
3. (v.12) BUT whoever will receive Him (by believing in His name) becomes a child of God.
