LISTEN AS THE MASTER PRAYS (Part 3)

John 17:11-19

An overview of Jesus’ prayer:

1.  (v.1-5) Jesus prayed for Himself

2.  (v.6-19) Jesus prayed for His present disciples

• (v.6-10) Jesus acknowledges to the Father what is true
• (v.11-19) Jesus requests from the Father what is needed

3.  (v.20-24) Jesus prayed for His future disciples

I.  THE REASON JESUS PRAYS FOR HIS DISCIPLES

     A.  Because of the nature of “the world”

           *The world is – Human society organized and functioning apart from God

     B.  Because of the disciples’ relationship to “the world”

1. (v.6,16) They were chosen out of the world
2. (v.11,15) They would remain in the world
3. (v.13) They were given God’s Word in the world
4. (v.14) They would be rejected by the world
5. (v.18) They were on a mission in the world

II.  THE REQUESTS JESUS MAKES FOR HIS DISCIPLES

1. (v.11,15) Keep them
2. (v.17,19) Sanctify them

1. By God’s truth
2. By Christ’s example
