Matthew 4:1-11

Introduction: Where did the Spirit lead Him?

(v.1a) To the wilderness

  1. (v.1b) To be tempted by the devil
  2. (v.2) To suffer physically

Hebrews 4:15-16

“For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.”

I. HE EXPOSED THE DEVIL’S STRATEGY

  1. The devil’s goal – to cause Christ to sin
  2. The devil’s methods (I John 2:16; Genesis 3:1-5)

  1. (v.3) The lust of the flesh
  2. (v.5-6) The pride of life
  3. (v.8-9) The lust of the eyes

II. HE DEMONSTRATED THE WAY OF VICTORY

  1. (v.10) He recognized the temptation for what it was
  2. (v.4,7,10) He responded to the temptation with Scripture - “it is written . . .”
  3. (v.11) The devil eventually “left Him”

  1. He knew the Scriptures
  2. He believed the Scriptures
  3. He used the Scriptures
  4. He obeyed the Scriptures

Conclusion: Following Jesus means following His example in dealing with temptation
